Like Idioms? Watch Catchphrase!

Do you like to learn idioms? They are used a lot in speaking but, unfortunately, are difficult to learn. Even if you don't use them, learning idioms can help you understand what native speakers are saying, for example, when watching films or TV programmes.

Idioms are phrases or a group of words that have a specific meaning. Usually you cannot understand the meaning by looking at the words.

One of my favourite quiz shows is Catchphrase. Contestants have to look at a clip and guess what the catchphrase is. Sometimes, the phrases are just names of films or songs but many are idioms. This is a fun way to learn idioms.

Watch one of the shows above and:

  1. Write down the catchphrases.

  2. Decide if these are idioms or just names of songs or films. You can use search on google to help you.

  3. If they are idioms, write down what they mean.

  4. Choose 1 - 2 idioms and learn them.

  5. Watch the Catchphrase programme again. Can you remember the idiom and answer the questions before the contestant?

  6. When you watch any English films or TV programmes, listen for these 2 idioms that you learnt. If you find them, listen to what the situation is in the film and why they used this idiom.
