English is all around

I was walking around town and took some pictures of signs outside the shops. So much you can learn from a simple sign!

Read the signs. See below for a larger image of each picture.

  1. What kind of shop is it?

  2. Pictures help us to understand but what words tell you what kind of shop it is?

  3. What message are the shops trying to give to customers?

  4. What kind of service do you think you will get from these shops?

  5. What new words or phrases did you see? What part of speech are these words - adjective, noun, verb, etc. Check the dictionary to find out.

  6. Look for groups of words e.g. adjective + noun, phrasal verbs

If you don't have English around where you live, the internet is full of English! Just do a web search for shops in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia. What information do you see? Ask yourself the same questions (1-6) above. Why not then write a short review of the shop (imagine you went to the shop) using the new vocabulary you learnt.

Happy shopping!!

If you enjoyed this activity, I can do lessons based on authentic materials and how to learn from them. I can include this in the Vocabulary and Speaking course. Just let me know that this is what you want to do.

The Study Smart course helps you to undertand how to find groups of words. When you understand this, you can start looking at English and learn by yourself.

Learning words in groups helps to learn vocabulary and grammar at the same time. Do you want to learn more about phrasal verbs? Check out the Grammar and Speaking course module on Phrasal Verbs.
